[略歴と自己紹介]
Aloha. I’m from Kailua, Hawai’i. Kailua is a small town on the windward side of the island of O’ahu. Being from Hawai’i, I’m fond of ocean sports, including surfing, body surfing, and swimming. I enjoy hiking and camping as well. I worked as both a counselor and a high school teacher before becoming a university teacher. Since moving to Japan, I’ve lived in Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Okinawa, but I feel that Matsuyama is the most comfortable and suitable place for me. Academic background: MAs in Humanistic Psychology and ESL.
[研究分野と現在の研究課題]
My primary research areas are intercultural communication and sociolinguistics, particularly cross-cultural pragmatics, ethnicity and language use, non-standard varieties of English (pidgins and creoles, World Englishes), and language and discrimination. I also have strong interests in language testing and evaluation, the assessment of intercultural competence, and content-based language teaching.
[ゼミ紹介]
My seminar will focus on intercultural communication and service learning. The goals of the seminar are to gain content knowledge, improve English language abilities, enhance intercultural understanding and communication skills, and strengthen the ability to interact successfully with others, particularly those from different social or cultural backgrounds. To give one example of possible seminar activities, I would like students to learn about traditional Hawaiian culture and modern Hawaiian society, and then experience doing community or environmentally-related volunteer work in Hawai’i itself.
